I have discovered a US P47 Thunderbolt fighter plane crashed in Leicester in September 1944 on Dovedale Road. Does anyone have any details or pictures of the crash site or recollections of the incident? Thanks Rich

Oh yes, Fancy that!

It's been a couple of years since I read it, blimey...

Thanks for showing me that. Looks like I'll have to read it again.

Rich W's Quote "The Prospect of Oadby account has some errors when comparing but the account in Ben Beazley's 'Wartime Leicester' seems more accurate, sating P47 hit No. 10, took out the rear and side before cannoning across the road into the back of 51 Stoughton Road and catching fire."

Are you sure there's an account in Ben Beazley's 'Wartime Leicester'?
I can't find it in there...? I get to the account of the B17 'Flying Fortress' that crashed on the 11th Sept 1944, on page 135.

Just got the accident card through this morning, thank you Don! Very interesting when read in conjunction with other reports and standing in the actual spot. The Prospect of Oadby account has some errors when comparing but the account in Ben Beazley's 'Wartime Leicester' seems more accurate, sating P47 hit No. 10, took out the rear and side before cannoning across the road into the back of 51 Stoughton Road and catching fire. Not sure where the 'Prospect' tale of the engine being concreted beneath the garage floor came from!
At some stage will go to the Mercury archive as it is supposidly well covered there.

Oh, I see... I never knew that. So your report fit's the description of Mr. Gimson's, which is very interesting.

It sounds quite different to what's stated in "A Prospect of Oadby: The Story Of It's Northern Development from 1902 to 1992".

Very unlikely. The Accident Report says that the aircraft impacted the ground almost horizontally. The engine was undoubtedtly recovered at the time. I have on file a separate eyewitness report which states that the engine ended up in an adjacent street, Allandale Road.

I've just had a letter arrive today, from a chap who lived at No.52 Stoughton Road, during the war, and he too wanted to know more about the Thunderbolt that crashed on Dovedale Road in 1944. He states the following:

"Of particular interest is anything that [you] may reveal on the U.S.A.A.F. fighter plane that crashed in the Webbs' garden, directly opposite, the engine coming to rest against the hedge on the corner to Allendale Road. I was in the garden at the time and nearly got hit by flying debris! The hedge was alight."

He's currently living in Honk Kong, but PM meif you would like to write to him.

His account is slightly different to what I've read. I was under the impression the the engine of the plane ended up being abandoned deep under the garage of the house...?

So, what is the real story?

Thanks Clive also for the Nuneaton lead. I've not seen the blue booklet but will track it down. I have borrowed a copy of the Bonser book and will dig into it deeper! Thanks for the help!

Yes. Some published material...

In the context of published sources, there's an account on Helen Boynton's "A Prospect of Oadby: The Story Of It's Northern Development from 1902 to 1992" ISBN: 0-9507278-8-1 (page 47)

There's also another brief mention of it in Roy Bonser's "Aviation in Leicestershire and Rutland" ISBN: 1-85780-089-3 (Page 377)
